Description

Saint Bastion Jadwiga was established as one of the 10 Old Dutch bastions, an element of the modern fortress city circuit started in 1643. Until 1654, this work was supervised by engineer Jeremias Constantin Altenberger. In the years 1698-1772 the chief engineer of Nysa fortifications was Jahann Georg von Rottenberg.
Before 1709, masonry elements were made. In the years 1741-1758 rebuilt by the Prussians. In the period from 1700 to 1758, there was a building in the courtyard, probably a warehouse for artillery equipment. Currently preserved two-story stone and brick casemates were built during the reconstruction in 1771-1774. The Bastion received a new numbering of Bastion X, a five-story perimeter of the earth bastion with stone casemates around the pentagon with a characteristic gate was created. In both bastions of the bastion there are brick casemates of the cannon house. During the siege in 1807, there were laboratory in which ammunition was prepared. In 1870, about 500 French prisoners of war were detained in the bastion casemates. From 1878 to 1887, the bastion functioned as barracks No. 9, and after the war it was sold into private hands. In 1924, the corner of the bastion's front was leveled.
Relics of the vaulted, two-storey casemate barracks of the former bastion of St. Jadwigi are partly covered by an external embankment surrounding the pentagonal courtyard, open from ul. Piast.
The casemates architecture is based on a horseshoe plan.
The building has brick and stone walls, the plastered facade is divided by wide pilasters into two-window spans, topped with a stone cornice.
In the corners of the "horseshoe" there are gates of ancient poterns (ramps) leading to the embankments. The tops of the gate openings, doors and windows are vaulted with brick arches
The interiors have brick, barrel and segmental vaults. The internal stairs are made of stone and have a metal balustrade.
